Social Emotional Learning

As part of our ongoing efforts to continue to provide the most impactful experiences for the children and families we serve, we have committed to implementing RULER, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

RULER supports entire school communities in understanding the value of emotions, building emotion skills, and creating and maintaining positive school climates.

RULER helps students and educators spend more time feeling how they want to feel: valued, connected, and inspired.
RULER is an acronym for the 5 key skills of emotional intelligence:
-
Recognising emotions in ourselves and others
-
Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
-
Labelling emotions accurately
-
Expressing emotions appropriately
-
Regulating emotions effectively

The development of these five RULER skills relies on four core tools: the Charter, Mood Meter, Meta-Moment, and Blueprint.

Charter
The charter's purpose is to create a positive culture and climate. It represents a collective agreed-upon norms for how everyone would like to be treated.
Mood Meter
The Mood Meter is a tool that helps people of all ages build self and social awareness. It helps us understand how our emotions influence our thinking and behaviour, and it empowers us to recognise and label our full range of emotions and manage them more effectively.

Meta-Moment
The Meta-Moment is a brief step back from the situation when we pause and think before acting.

Blueprint
The Blueprint is a tool for helping people to develop empathy and perspective.
